Nominado a los Oscar de Hollywood en dos ocasiones por la películas Cowboy de Medianoche (1969) y El tren del infierno (1985). Ganó el Oscar de la academia por El regreso (1978)

Fue el boxeador de la película Campeón (1979).

Es padre de la exuberante actriz Angelina Jolie y del director James Haven, se casó con la también actriz Marcheline Bertrandel 12 de diciembre de 1971. Ahora están separados.
